The story
Game Keepers is a baseball fantasy novel by Steve Dressing for readers 8 to 12, and the first of the two Down Home books.
A playoff game ends with parents and coaches arguing, and the kids of the Waterfalls youth league stop having fun. Then George Starr kicks the ground, and the team finds Down Home, a world under the field where magical creatures help them play better and enjoy the game again. When some of the players break Down Home's rules and an intruder threatens it, the kids have to save it without getting banished for good.
The book is about sportsmanship, kindness, and being willing to listen, learn and improve.
“A lot of parents make sports about themselves; they want their kids to win, end up in the Major Leagues, and totally distort the point of the game. The Little League was created for kids to have fun and explore their talents. In the end, a kid’s path is totally up to them. Kids will be good at the things they are passionate about. You can’t hide talent. Game Keepers is to encourage kids to develop their passions and chase them.”
